CTET EVS: Animals, Honeybees & Ants (Short Notes)
This guide covers essential facts from NCERT Class 4 and 5, focusing on animals, honeybees, ants, and their social structures. These points are frequently asked in CTET and other teaching exams.
🐾 Animals: Ears, Hair & Survival
Understanding animal characteristics is a key topic in the EVS section.
- Viviparous Animals: Animals whose ears are visible and have hair on their bodies give birth to young ones.
- Oviparous Animals: Animals that do not have external ears or hair on their skin lay eggs (e.g., lizards, crocodiles, birds).
- Patterns: The different patterns on an animal's skin are due to the hair on their skin.
💡 Tip
Symbiotic Relationship: TheEgret and the Buffalohave a symbiotic relationship where the egret eats insects off the buffalo's back, helping both survive.
🐘 The Elephant Herd (हाथियों का झुंड)
Elephants are social animals with a unique matriarchal structure.
- Leadership: The oldest female is the leader of the herd.
- Composition: A herd typically consists of 10-12 female elephants and their young ones.
- Males: Male elephants leave the group after the age of 14-15 years.
- Consumption: An adult elephant can eat more than 100 kg of leaves and twigs in a single day.
- Sleep: They sleep for only 2 to 4 hours a day.
- Cooling: Mud and water keep their skin cool. Their large ears act as fans to dissipate heat.
🐝 Honeybees (मधुमक्खियाँ)
Honeybees follow a strict social hierarchy and are a favorite topic in CTET.
ℹ️ Note
Best Time for Beekeeping: Honeybees lay their eggs fromOctober to December. This is the best time to start beekeeping.
- Queen Bee: Every beehive has one Queen Bee that lays eggs.
- Worker Bees: Most bees in the hive are worker bees. They perform all tasks like collecting nectar, building the hive, and rearing the young.
- Communication: When a bee finds nectar, it performs a special dance to inform other bees.
- Males: Drones (males) have no special role as workers.
🐜 Social Insects: Ants, Termites & Wasps
Like honeybees, ants live in highly organized groups.
- Queen Ants: Lay the eggs.
- Soldier Ants: Look after and guard the nest.
- Worker Ants: Always busy looking for food and bringing it to the nest.
- Group Living: Termites (दीमक) and wasps (ततैया) also live together in similar social groups.
