🐍 1. The Story of Snake Charmers (कालबेलिया समुदाय)
In NCERT Class 5, the community of snake charmers is highlighted for their traditional knowledge and relationship with nature.
- Kalbeliyas: Snake charmers are also known as Kalbeliyas.
- Dance Style: Their traditional dance is called 'Kalbelia', which features movements similar to those of a snake.
- Traditional Medicine: They collect herbs from the forest to make medicines for various ailments, including snake bites.
- Snakes & Farmers: Snakes are considered friends of farmers because they eat rats in the fields, protecting the crops.
- Poisonous Snakes in India: Only four types of snakes in India are poisonous:
- Cobra (नाग)
- Common Krait (करैत)
- Russel's Viper (दुबोइया - Duboiya)
- Saw-scaled Viper (अफाई - Afai)
- Anatomy of a Bite: Snakes have two hollow teeth called fangs. When they bite, the poison enters the body through these fangs.
- Antidote: The medicine for a snake bite is made from the snake's own poison and is available at all government hospitals.
🍽️ 2. From Tasting to Digesting (स्वाद से पाचन तक)
Understanding how our body processes food is a key part of the EVS curriculum.
- Stomach Temperature: The temperature inside our stomach is about 30°C.
- Nature of Digestive Juices: The digestive juices in the stomach are acidic in nature.
- Kalahandi District: Located in Odisha, this district is famous for growing the most rice in India. Ironically, many people there still live in poverty.
- Food Preservation:
- Drying: Glass jars and bottles are dried thoroughly in the sun before filling them with pickles to remove any moisture.
- Preserved Products: Items like pickles, Aam Papad (Mamidi Tandra), chutney, and juices are made to enjoy fruits like mangoes throughout the year.
- Muslin Cloth: This fine cloth is traditionally used to strain liquids in the kitchen.
