In English grammar, Voice describes the relationship between the action (verb) and the participants (subject/object).

  • Active Voice: The subject performs the action. (e.g., "Ram eats an apple.")
  • Passive Voice: The subject receives the action. (e.g., "An apple is eaten by Ram.")

📝 Examples & Practice

🔹 Present Tense

  • Active: They play cricket.

  • Passive: Cricket is played by them.

  • Active: Rohan is singing a song.

  • Passive: A song is being sung by Rohan.

🔹 Past Tense

  • Active: She purchased the stocks of Tata Motors.

  • Passive: The stocks of Tata Motors were purchased by her.

  • Active: He had killed a snake.

  • Passive: A snake had been killed by him.

🔹 Future Tense

  • Active: She will cook food.
  • Passive: Food will be cooked by her.

❓ Interrogative Sentences

When converting questions, the auxiliary verb (helping verb) moves to the front of the sentence.

Formula for Interrogatives:

  • Active: Do/Does + Subject + V1 + Object?
  • Passive: Is/Am/Are + Object + V3 + by + Subject?

Examples:

  • Active: Does she cheat you?
  • Passive: Are you cheated by her?
  • Active: Did Ranjana teach him?
  • Passive: Was he taught by Ranjana?
  • Active: Has she participated in the competition?
  • Passive: Has the competition been participated in by her?

💡 Tip

When to use Passive Voice?Use passive voice when the action is more important than the person doing it, or when the "doer" is unknown. (e.g., "The road was repaired.")
