English Grammar: Words and Sentences
Every language has building blocks. In English, we start with letters, which form words, and words that eventually form sentences.
🔤 1. What is a Word?
A word is a group of letters arranged in a definite order that conveys a specific meaning.
- Examples:
- Ant (A-n-t)
- Apple (A-p-p-l-e)
- School (S-c-h-o-o-l)
- Police (P-o-l-i-c-e)
✍️ 2. What is a Sentence?
A sentence is a group of words arranged in a proper order to express a complete thought or meaning.
Key Rules for a Sentence:
- It must start with a Capital letter.
- It must end with a Full stop (.), Question mark (?), or Exclamation mark (!).
- It must have a proper order (Subject + Verb + Object).
- Examples:
- I like an apple.
- My name is Rahul.
- I study in Class 5.
- The school is very big.
💡 Tip
Proper Order: A group of words like "Apple an like I" is not a sentence because it does not make sense. It must be "I like an apple" to be a correct sentence.
