English Grammar: Nouns and Their Types
A Noun is a word that names a person, place, animal, thing, or idea. It is one of the most fundamental parts of speech in any language.
- Examples: Ram (Person), Delhi (Place), Dog (Animal), Book (Thing), Honesty (Idea).
🏗️ Kinds of Noun
There are five main types of nouns that we use in daily language.
1. Proper Noun (व्यक्तिवाचक संज्ञा)
A Proper Noun refers to a particular person, place, or thing. These nouns always start with a Capital Letter.
- Examples: Mahatma Gandhi, Sachin Tendulkar, Taj Mahal, India, Rae Bareli.
2. Common Noun (जातिवाचक संज्ञा)
A Common Noun is a name given in common to every person, place, or thing of the same kind or class. It represents a category.
- Examples: Boy, City, Country, Player, Book, Building.

3. Abstract Noun (भाववाचक संज्ञा)
An Abstract Noun is the name of something that we can only think of or feel, but cannot see, touch, hear, smell, or taste.
- Examples: Love, Childhood, Knowledge, Truth, Honesty, Sleep, Strength, Freedom.
4. Collective Noun (समूहवाचक संज्ञा)
A Collective Noun is a word used to represent a group or collection of people, animals, or things.
- Examples:
- A Crowd of people.
- A Class of students.
- A Flock of sheep.
- A Team of players.
- A Gang of thieves.
5. Material Noun (पदार्थवाचक संज्ञा)
A Material Noun is the name of a material or substance of which things are made.
- Examples: Gold, Silver, Wood, Paper, Stone, Cotton.
- Usage: My ring is made of gold. Wood is used for making furniture.
