CTET EVS: Birds, Braille & Regional Housing
This series provides concise, high-yield notes based on NCERT textbooks, specifically designed for CTET and state teaching exams.
🦅 The World of Birds
Birds have unique biological adaptations for survival and navigation.
- Vision: Most birds have fixed eyes. To see around, they must rotate their heads.
- Dual Focus: Birds can focus on two different things at once because their eyes are on either side of their head.
- Super Vision: Kites, Eagles, and Vultures can see four times as far as humans.
- Neck Movement:
- Mynah: Moves her neck back and forth with a quick jerk.
- Owl: Can rotate its neck backwards to a large extent (nearly 270 degrees).
⠃ Braille Script (ब्रेल लिपि)
- Origin: Invented by Louis Braille from France.
- Design: It is read by running fingers over raised dots.
- Standard: The script is based on 6 points.
- Modernity: Braille can now also be written using computers.
🏺 The Evolution of Pots
- Early Era: The first pots were made of stone and clay.
- Innovation: Humans discovered that baking clay pots in fire makes them much stronger and more durable.
🏠 Regional Housing in India
The climate and terrain of a region determine the type of houses people build.
| House Type | Region | Characteristics |
|---|---|---|
| Igloo | Arctic Regions | Made of ice blocks; oval-shaped. Traps heat inside to keep occupants warm. |
| Rebo (Tent) | Ladakh (Changpa) | Cone-shaped tents made of woven Yak hair. Strips are stitched together for durability. |
| Bamboo Houses | Assam | Built on bamboo pillars 10-12 feet above the ground to avoid floodwaters. Sloppy roofs. |
| Stone & Wood | Hilly (Manali/Srinagar) | Built using stone and wood with wooden flooring. Sloping roofs for snow/rain. |
| Mud Houses | Rajasthan | Walls made of mud; roofs made of thorny bushes. Plastered with cow dung to repel insects. |
| House Boats | Kashmir/Kerala | Can be 80 feet long. Srinagar's "Donga" boats feature Khatamband (zig-saw wood carving). |
💧 Water Conservation: Tanka
- In dry regions like Rajasthan, people collect rainwater using a special method called Tanka (covered underground tanks).
- This ensures water availability during the harsh summer months when people often have to travel long distances for water.
ℹ️ Note
Key Exam Fact: TheKhatambandcarving is a specific geometric pattern found on the ceilings of houseboats in Kashmir.
