Noun

A Noun is a name of  a person, place, animal or thing.

Example- Ram, Delhi, Dog, Book, etc.


Kinds of Noun

1.Proper Noun

A noun that designates a particular person, place or things.

Example-

In the above sentence, no.1,  Mahatma Gandhi is the name of a particular leader . In sentence  no.2, Sachin Tendulkar is a particular player. And in sentence no.3, Tajmahal is a particular building.

1.Mahatma Gandhi was a great leader of India.

   2.Sachin Tendulkar was a great player.

   3.The Tajmahal is a beautiful Building.

In the above sentence, no.1,  Mahatma Gandhi

So,  Mahatma Gandhi, Sachin Tendulkar  and Tajmahal  are the special names of particular noun. Therefore , these are Proper Nouns.

 

2.CommonNoun

A common noun is a name which is given as common to a person, place or thing of the same kind of class.

A common noun represent a class.

 

Example-

1.Sandeep is a good player.

2.Seema love reading book.

The Noun player may be used for any player,book for any book and leader for any leader. These noun are used in general and are common to all nouns of that class. They are not use for any particular noun. Hence , these are called Common noun.

3. Abstract Noun

 An Abstract noun is the name of something that we can only think but cannot see, touch, hear, smell and taste.

Example- Freedom, Childhood, Knowledge, Truth, Luxury, anger, joy, Honesty, Marriage, Death, hate, etc.

1.This child is having a sound sleep.

2.This old man has no strength.

3.Childhood is full of memories.


4.Collective Noun

 

There is a big crowd near the shopping mall.

 The teacher is teaching in the class.

A flock of sheep is grazing in the field.


A collective noun is the word used to represent a group of person, animal or things.

 

In the above sentence, we see a crowd( a group of people), in sentence 2, a class( a group of students) and in sentence 3, we see a flock(a group or collection of sheep).

So the words, flock, crowd and flock are called collective noun.


For example- 

A band of musicians.

A gang of thieves.

A panel of experts.

A team of players.

A herd of deer.


5.Material Noun

A material noun is the name of a material or substance of which things are made.

 

Example- gold, silver, wood, paper, stone, etc.

 

       1.My ring is made of gold.

  2.Wood is used for making furniture.

      3.White paper is used for drawing.

In the above sentences, we see gold is used for making ornaments, wood is used for making furniture and paper is used for drawing.

So gold, wood and paper is material noun.
