 Three little words A, An & The are called articles.

A and An are indefinite articles.

The is called a definite articles.


 Use of A and An 


 A and An is used before a singular common noun.

A is used before singular countable noun which gives us consonant sound. 

Example- 
A dog, A cat, A bus, A car, etc.

An is used before singular countable noun which gives us vowel sound.

Example-

An owl, An inkpot, An aeroplane, etc.

 

1. This is a cow.

2. This is an ice-cream.

3. I have a book.

4.This is a dog.

5. This is an apple.


  Use of The-  

1. The is used when a singular noun is meant to represent a whole class.

Example-

The is a domestic animal.

The cat loves comfort.

2. The is used before the superlative degree of an adjective.

Example-

The darkest cloud has has a silver lining.

The richest man was going to Dubai.

3. The is used before musical instruments.

Example-

The flute, The guitar, The banjo, The harmonium, etc.

4. The is always used with the names of rivers, mountains, seas, famous buildings and holy books.

Example-

The Himalayas, The Arabian Sea, The Taj, The Bible, etc.
