Past Tense 

Simple Past Tense 

  • Affirmative Sentence
Rule - S + V2 + O + Extra

Note - In simple past helping verb "did" is used when we make negative or interrogative sentence

Example - 
  1. He read book.
  2. I went to market.
  3. She wrote a book.
  4. Raja broke the glass jar.

  • Negative Sentence

Rule - S + did + not + V1 + O + Extra

Example -
  1. They did not sing a song.
  2. She did not write a letter.
  3. We did not play cricket.
  4. Ravi did not freeze a ice-cream.
  • Interrogative Sentence

Rule -  Did + S + V1 + O + Extra?

Example - 
  1. Did he write a letter?
  2. Did you come to my home?
  3. Did she dance in the school?
  4. Did you sing the song on stage?

  • Negative Interrogative Sentence

Rule -  Did + S + not +  V1 + O + Extra?

Example-
  1. Did she not play Ludo?
  2. Did you not complete you practise?
  3. Did he not eat junk food?
  4. Did they not steal your pen?

Past Continuous Tense

  • Affirmative Sentence

Rule -  S + was/were + V4 + O.

Note - In past continuous tense was/were  are the helping verb and V4 means 'V1+ing' .

Example -
  1. I was going to school.
  2. She was eating junk food.
  3. Students were playing cricket.
  4. Rohan was teaching in the JKPS school.

  • Negative Sentence

Rule -  S + was/were+ not + V4 + O.

Example -
  1. Ranjeet was not learning English.
  2. She was not cleaning the room.
  3. You were not coming to my home.
  4. Mohan was not listening a song.
  • Interrogative Sentence

Rule -   Was/Were + S + V4 + O?

Example -
  1. Were you going to Delhi?
  2. Was he winning the race?
  3. Were she singing a song?
  4. Was Tenjing climbing on mountains?
**Note - We make these sentence with the help of Question Words like( what, why, etc.). In this case Question word work as a Subject of the sentence.
Rule - Question Word + was/were+ S + V4 + O ?

Example - 
  1. Why were you coming late?
  2. Who was solving the math question in the class?
  3. What were you doing there?
  • Negative Interrogative Sentence

Rule -   Was/Were + S + not + V4 + O?

Example -
  1. Were you not doing home work?
  2. Was she not coming to school?
  3. Was Rahul not studying in coaching?
  4. Were they not moving to America ?

Past Perfect Tense

  • Affirmative Sentence

Rule -   S + had + V3 + O.

Example -
  1. I had gone to market.
  2. Rishi had left the railway station.
  3. You had bought a new clothes.
  4. She had spent all the money.
  • Negative Sentence

Rule -   S + had +  not  + V3  + O.

Example-
  1. I had not played cricket.
  2. Mohan had not watched a horror movie.
  3. Jacob had not found a new job.
  4. We had not eaten all the snacks.
  • Interrogative Sentence

Rule -   Had + S  + V3  + O?

Example- 
  1. Had you taken the meal?
  2. Had he boiled the water?
  3. Had Rishabh lived in Canada?
  4. Had she been married when I was born?
  • Negative Interrogative Sentence

Rule -   Had  + S + not + V3  + O?

Example-
  1. Had you not written the letter?
  2. Had she not called you?
  3. Had they not informed him?
  4. Had Ritu not travelled by train?

Past Perfect Continuous Tense

Note - We use time in this type of sentence. In this type of sentence the work is still in continue and for some period of time. We use period of time like "Since/for" in the sentence.

We use "for" with indefinite time like- for yesterday, for one hour, for 2 year etc.,
We use "since" with definite time like - Since Monday, since 9 April, since two o' clock, etc., 

  • Affirmative Sentence

Rule -   S + Had + been + V4 + for/since + time .

Example -
  1. He had been teaching in the school for three years.
  2. You had been playing cricket since morning.
  3. Radha had been using a samsung phone for two hours.
  4. Raju had been cooking food since January.
  • Negative Sentence

Rule -   S + Ha+ not + been + V4 + for/since + time .

Example-
  1. He had not been playing cricket for three year.
  2. You had not been eating medicine for two months.
  3. We had not been studying since yesterday.
  4. I had not been playing computer games for two days.
  • Interrogative Sentence

Rule -    Had + S + been + V4 + for/since + time ?

Example -
  1. Had you been working in TCL company since 2015? 
  2. Had they been playing football for a month?
  3. Had she been reading a book since morning?
  4. Had Thomas been painting a house for five days?
  • Negative Interrogative Sentence

Rule -    Had + S + not + been + V4 + for/since + time ?

Example - 
  1. Had Sunny not been doing his home work for three days?
  2. Had they not been collecting the sample since Monday?
  3. Had company manager not been allowing workers to enter the office for three months?
  4. Had Ranveer not been eating sugar since January?
